I have tested and reviewed IONOS across multiple products, from shared hosting to email plans, and one question comes up again and again: is the free domain actually real, or is it a bait-and-switch?
The short answer is yes, it is real. But “free” means different things depending on which IONOS plan you are on. Some plans give you a free domain for the first year only. Others, specifically the email plans, include a domain that stays free for as long as you keep the plan active.
In this guide, I will break down exactly which plans include a free domain, what extensions you can choose from, what happens when the free period ends, and how to claim the domain when you sign up.
If you want a broader look at the provider first, check out our full IONOS review and our IONOS business hosting review before deciding if it is the right fit for you.

Is the IONOS Free Domain Legit?
Yes. IONOS is a legitimate registrar managing over 22 million domains, and the free domain is a genuine part of most paid plans. It is not a trick. When you add a qualifying IONOS plan to your cart and proceed to checkout, the domain registration shows up at $0.
That said, the offer has conditions. The domain is free for the first year on most hosting and website builder plans. On email plans, it can stay free permanently. Knowing which category you fall into matters before you sign up.
Which IONOS Plans Include a Free Domain?
IONOS bundles a free domain across three main product categories:
1. Web Hosting Plans
All four shared hosting plans, Essential, Starter, Plus, and Ultimate, include one free domain for the first year. This applies whether you pay $4/month for Essential or $10/month for Ultimate.

After year one, the domain renews at the standard rate for your chosen extension.
Here is a quick look at what each plan costs and what is included alongside the free domain:
| Plan | Intro Price | Renewal Price | Free Domain |
| Essential | $4/month | $8/month | 1 year |
| Starter | $6/month | $10/month | 1 year |
| Plus | $1/month | $14/month | 1 year |
| Ultimate | $10/month | $18/month | 1 year |
2. Website Builder Plans
The MyWebsite Starter, Plus, and Pro plans all include a free domain for the first year. The included extensions are .com, .us, .ca, .me, .biz, .info, .org, .net, and .online.
3. Email Plans
IONOS email plans, specifically Mail Basic 1 (starting at $1.10/month) and Mail Basic 25 (starting at $2/month), include a free custom domain. Based on the checkout pop-up, the domain is free for the first year when you sign up on a 12-month term or longer.
After year one, it renews at the standard rate for your chosen extension. This follows the same pattern as the hosting and website builder plans, so budget for the renewal cost from year two onward.

If you want a guaranteed lifetime free domain on an email plan, Microsoft Exchange 2019 ($4.50/month) is the one to pick. IONOS explicitly lists “Lifetime domain included” on that plan.

Microsoft 365 ($1/month introductory) includes a free domain for the first year only. Microsoft 365 Business Standard does not list a free domain as a feature at all.
Google Workspace Business Starter and Business Standard do not include a free domain, based on the current IONOS product page.
What Domain Extensions Can You Choose?
Across hosting and website builder plans, IONOS offers the following free domain extensions:
- .com
- .net
- .org
- .info
- .biz
- .us
- .ca
- .online
- .me
These cover the most commonly used extensions for business and personal websites. You get one free domain slot per plan, and you can choose any available extension from this list during checkout.
If you want a more niche extension like .io, .tech, or .ai, those are not included in the free domain offer and would need to be purchased separately. Our IONOS domain registration review covers the full range of extensions IONOS supports and how their pricing compares to other registrars.
Is the Domain Free for the First Year Only, or Longer?
This depends entirely on which IONOS product you are buying. Here is a clear breakdown:
- Hosting plans (Essential, Starter, Plus, Ultimate): Free for the first year, then billed separately at the standard renewal rate.
- Website builder plans (Starter, Plus, Pro): Free for the first year, same renewal process as hosting.
- Microsoft Exchange 2019: Free for the lifetime of the plan. This is explicitly stated on the product page.
- Microsoft 365: Free for the first year only.
- IONOS Mail Basic 1 and Mail Basic 25: Free for the first year on a 12-month term or longer, then billed at the standard renewal rate from year two.
One thing to keep in mind across all plans: IONOS uses auto-renewal by default. Your domain will renew automatically at the end of the registration period unless you cancel it first. You can manage this from the Domains and SSL section of your IONOS dashboard.
What Happens After the Free Year Ends?
When your first year is up on a hosting or website builder plan, the domain moves from “included” to “additional” status.
At that point, IONOS bills it separately at the standard renewal rate.
Common renewal prices at IONOS:
- .com: $20/year
- .org: $20/year
- .net: $20/year
- .info: $35/year

If you want to keep the domain, you do nothing. IONOS renews it automatically and charges the renewal to your payment method on file. If you decide not to renew, you need to cancel the domain registration before it expires to avoid the charge.
You can also transfer the domain to another registrar at any point. IONOS allows transfers out, and the domain must have been registered for at least 60 days before a transfer can be initiated. You will need an authorization code from IONOS and will need to unlock the domain transfer in your dashboard settings.
What Else Comes With the Free Domain?
The domain does not arrive alone. Every IONOS plan that includes a free domain also bundles:
- A free Wildcard SSL certificate, which covers the main domain and up to 10,000 subdomains
- At least one professional email account (2 GB storage per account)
- Free WHOIS privacy protection, so your personal contact details are not exposed in public domain lookups
- 24/7 support via phone and live chat
The SSL certificate is particularly useful. Many hosting providers charge extra for SSL or only include a basic single-domain certificate. IONOS includes a Wildcard SSL across all plans, which adds real value if you plan to run subdomains.
How to Claim Your Free IONOS Domain
The process is built into the checkout. Here is how it works:
- Go to the IONOS website and select a qualifying plan (hosting, website builder, or email).
- When prompted to add a domain, use the search bar to check availability for your preferred name.

- If the extension you want is in the free list (.com, .net, .org, etc.), the price will show as $0.
- Add it to your order and proceed to checkout.
- Create your IONOS account or log in if you already have one.
- Complete payment. The domain is registered immediately after the order is processed.
If your preferred domain name is taken, IONOS will suggest alternatives. You can also proceed without a domain during checkout and add one later from the Domains and SSL section of your dashboard.
Is the IONOS Free Domain Worth It?
For anyone already planning to buy an IONOS hosting or email plan, yes. Getting a free domain bundled in saves you the $10 to $20 you would otherwise pay to register it separately in year one.
The Microsoft Exchange 2019 plan is the standout option for anyone who wants a branded email address and a domain that stays free permanently. At $4.50/month, it costs more than the basic email plans, but the lifetime domain guarantee removes any renewal uncertainty.
For website builders and hosting plans, the free domain is a genuine first-year saving. The main thing to watch is year two. Once the domain becomes an additional item, you could be paying up to $20/year for a .com renewal. Factor that into your total cost when comparing IONOS to other providers.
